Pool Light

If you have a pool or spa, one the best times to go in to it is in the evening. Of course you will need to see where you are going so lighting is important. But what if you want to make a romantic scene or a party one? That is where a pool light comes in to play. You see, a pool light can change the mood and atmosphere whether it is underwater or above around the water’s edge.

Really it was only until recently that underwater lights have had so many options. Before now, your only options were white lights, how many do you need, and where will they be drilled in to.

Now a day’s, a pool light can be moved around easily with magnet attachments. There are an unlimited amount of filters and colors that you can use to change the light. There are even strobe and color changing pool lights that do so based off of a color wheel inside the light housing itself. Everything from halogen to the newest LED and fiber optic lighting is available for pools. The only question is which type of pool light do you want?

The regular incandescent and halogen bulbs are the cheapest and give you a bright white color. You will see them from 75watts and up to 500watts. If you are installing them yourself you will need to conform to building codes in your area and make sure it is actually installed properly with the proper equipment. Even a small break in a wire or the wrong type of wire will lead to electrocution and possibly death. It is for this reason I would always recommend a certified pool professional to do the installation. These types of lights also have color lenses that can fit over the lights to change the color. However you will need lenses that are fit for the wattage. A 75watt lens will melt when using a 200watt bulb even while submerged underwater.

The most expensive craze at the moment is fiber optic lighting. The only problems I see with this type of pool light is that you need a lot of them for any substantial light there are many wires to hide and get out of the way. Most setups contain a single box which all of the fiber cable will connect to. If you have a large pool or a lot of fiber cables you will need multiple fiber boxes. These boxes by the way can run up to $100 a piece.

The most entertaining light setups are those with colored lights. The wheel which contains the different color pool light filters is controlled automatically by a circuit board. Most will contain the normal primary colors of blue, green, red and perhaps a few others. The color led setups are much more advanced where you can actually have specific light shows according to the programming of your control box.

If you have an existing pool or spa, think about what even a single pool light could do for you. There are many options available today and prices are becoming cheaper and cheaper all the time. Just remember safety first and enjoy your romantic or party setup for years to come.
